MERCI!

MHA Steve Kent

A Toronto (ACD):

This National Dance Week 2013 has been amazing and we are thrilled to see this event increasingly recognized and adopted throughout Canada. Additionally, in Quebec our partner RQD has simultaneously organized activities alongside our array of events with Québec Danse.

Among our major realizations were 3 main topics/ foci:

Alberta
As the province launching the 2013 edition of National Dance Week and featured this year through the National Dance Week message.

afbs with wordsHealth
In particular the implementation of a national health insurance program and our upcoming advocacy efforts in this regard (with ongoing support of AFBS) AND the celebration of the launch of the first Health Therapy Center in Canada.logo_gbgp_fr01

Dance in Diversity as pluralism and diversity are topics CDA wishes to prioritize and improve upon.

The launch of National Dance Week started with a beautiful message of Dance Ambassador Vicki Adams Willis of Decidedly Jazz Danceworks

Alberta Dance Alliance logoAlberta also featured the Mayors of both Calgary and Edmonton jointly reading the Dance Manifesto.  Thank you to Alberta Dance Alliance for putting together these two fantastic videos in highlighting Alberta this year.

Calgary Arts Development logoThe Calgary Arts Development Department also hosted a meeting regarding their Arts Plan which gathered the local community to learn more about this exciting initiative and what it means for the city of Calgary.

Everywhere, professionals and communities gathered to celebrate dance hand in hand and we are thrilled to share some highlights with you:

Dance Nova Scotia logoNova Scotia – Dance Nova Scotia celebrated National Dance Week with this wonderful video. Nova Scotia puts dance at the heart of their community, and in Nova Scotia’s House of Commons: political figures celebrate dance.

the Dance Centre blk-whtBritish Columbia loves to dance! A great video has been recorded to mark National Dance Week, thanks to The Dance Center. Lots of activity took place throughout the province, and and you can read more about it in two media articles here and here.
Dance Manitoba logoIn Manitoba, forward-thinking advocate, Stephanie Ballard continues her hard work on Manitoba dance day, which took place on April 29 during International Dance Day.

In Saskatchewan many events took place including a special highlight on senior’s activities.

And back here in Toronto the CDA team was also kept busy with National Dance Week activities:
Ericka attended Ontario Folk Dance Council’s event and also tried her hands out at drumming at COBA’s annual dance and drum-a thon.

Aviva was thrilled to attend Toronto Dance Theatre’s Brussels/TO project and the York anniversary presentation and was mesmerized by the exquisite talent of the dancers.

Nathalie had the pleasure to attend the moving York University’s anniversary with several team members and the beautiful flamenco performance Portales at Harbourfront Centre, presented by Esmeralda Enrique Spanish dance company, on Sunday.

Concerning our Communication Officer, Ronna Lane Flowers, we can say that she was downright everywhere at once!
Among the activities was an impromptu street show on Monday with young dancers from Toronto Dance Theatre (TDT) that were filming each other at the Distillery District. Wednesday, she was very active in participating in CDA-CPAMO’s event, Dancing in Diversity. She spent her time promoting CDA, I love dance, Vote for Dance, and the Dance Manifesto (she even had the chance to sneak into the theatre and enjoy some of the performances). Friday, she participated in an Aerial Silks class at Artist Play Dance which was great fun. Saturday, she attended DanceOntario’s Youth Board event organized at Pearson International Airport. Sunday, she was at the Skills and Soul Dance Battle hosted by Gadfly Dance Company at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre.

cpamo_logoAdditionally, CDA was thrilled to partner with CPAMO for the Dancing in Diversity event which took place at the Dancemakers studio on April 24. It was inspirational to collaborate with all the amazing artists as you can see in our short, promo clip.

We hope that you are as delighted with this second edition of National Dance Week as we are. Start thinking ahead to plans for 2014 and remember the “I love dance/J‘aime la danse” Campaign continues all year long! See you soon and good luck with all your upcoming activities!
